Nigeria Rig Fire to Burn for at Least 30 More Days

The Nigeria fire that began in the middle of January continues to burn and Radio Nigeria has reported that the Chevron corporation has no intention of putting the blaze to rest sooner than 30 days from now.

The onset of the fire occurred while Chevron was drilling a gas-exploration well approximately six miles from the coast in Funiwa. Since its commencement, the North Apoi platform utilized by the company has had to cease output of nearly 2,000 barrels per day, yet the company has seemed to lag in its address of the issue. Now, more than a week later, Chevron has begun to take action in what has been a slow start to putting out the fire still burning in Nigeria. A Transocean Ltd. rig will be brought in within the next three to four days in order to begin drilling a relief well to stop the fire. However, the process will not be quick. In fact, it is expected to take up to 30 days, during which time the fire will continue to blaze.

Executive Director of Environmental Rights Action, N. Bassey, the affiliate of Friends of the Earth, has reported that the persisting fire has caused spills in fishing areas in the Koluama area of southern Bayelsa. He further went on to state that for each day the fire continues to burn, the leakage will continue to pollute the environment and affect not only the ocean wildlife but also the lives of thousands who rely on the ocean for their livelihoods.

In the wake of the fire, two workers remain missing and damages continue to be unearthed.
