Late Wednesday night, an explosion occurred at a BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana. According to a statement from the Whiting Fire Department, a compressor at the refinery exploded and caused a fire at the plant. While the Whiting Fire Department was on standby for assistance, the fire was ultimately extinguished by the BP in-house fire department within two hours.
Although the blast was felt by some people up to half a mile away, no serious injuries were reported. One worker was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
The whiting refinery is the 6th largest of its kind in the United States, though a spokesman from BP said that the blast only had a minimal impact on the refining operations and that the refinery is still in operation.
Wednesday's explosion came on the 59th anniversary of the explosion at the Whiting refinery that killed a three year old child and caused fires that burned for eight day.
